We all enjoyed a long weekend full of family, gathering, sharing, and endless amounts of home cooked food. We love the holidays for bringing everyone together and want to focus this week on another area of the home where we most frequently gather over food – the breakfast nook. Some call this little casual eat in area off the kitchen the dining nook, dinette, or banquette, but most know it as the breakfast nook. The often custom built-in area of benches surrounding a small dining table where casual meals and most often breakfasts are shared.
We have been busy this season assisting many homeowners with creating custom bench cushions, slipcovers, and pillows to make this area of the home feel comfortable and welcoming (not to mention – look great). Often times when you move into a new home, builders leave this area without seat cushions, but after daily use of this space our clients reach out to get the added comfort they desire. Our workroom has created a couple different versions of cushions for breakfast nooks and we want to share with you some of the most popular options for custom cushions on Martha’s Vineyard.
The kitchen is often a neutral palette in coastal homes, white or wooden cabinetry and natural stone countertops are very popular right now. On occasion we see beautiful colored stone or glass backsplashes, but we’re also seeing a lot of white subway tile and soft neutral natural stone in new builds at the moment. Neutral on neutral on neutral – therefore your built-in breakfast nook is a great opportunity to show more personality in the kitchen! Below we are sharing our favorite inspirational photos from Pinterest of custom banquette cushions.

Not only is this an area of the home where we desire beauty and comfort, but an area that demands performance. Morning coffee, chicken wings, baby food, cheese and wine night, you name it and we understand it can, and likely will, spill at some point over the life of your cushions. We always recommend our clients go with custom slipcovers in this area of the home, for ease of cleaning spills and routine washing. Pre-washed cotton blends are a traditional favorite for slipcovers and available in a variety of gorgeous colors and patterns. However, for breakfast nooks we’ve been steering all of our clients towards performance fabrics lately. What is a performance fabric? Have you heard of Sunbrella? Sunbrella is to performance fabric what Kleenex is to facial tissue – a popular brand name on the market that people often use to reference the type of product they are talking about in general. People often ask for Sunbrella seat cushions to refer to washable slipcovered cushions that are stain and mildew resistant. Now, we pride ourselves on crafting chic and timeless interiors and therefore our studio library boasts a large selection of various brand names of performance fabrics. There are so many options out there on the market! We have done the leg work for our clients and curated the best of the best in timeless coastal textures and prints for Vineyard homeowners. Below we’re sharing a few snapshots of some of our recent custom creations for clients!
As always, we give our clients detailed cleaning instructions specific to their fabrics when purchasing custom cushions for the home. Not all performance fabrics are created equal and we’ll dive into those details during appointments to ensure we’re setting you up for success and crafting an interior fitting to your lifestyle.
